Today was a chance to experiment with 10x8 large format photography. I really enjoyed this process as the environment was a lot more controlled than the 35mm photography experiments, so you knew more of what to expect from the photo. I was also really surprised by how much detail had been picked up by the camera! After developing my negative I inverted it on photoshop to produce the final result.
Photograph 1:
For this first photograph I wanted to depict my everyday appearance. I look natural, happy and confident. If I was to repeat this image I would wear I lighter top to create contrast between my hair and my clothing. Overall I like this image and the simple composition it features.
Photograph 2:
For this photograph I wanted to change my appearance, form what I usually look like. I was inspired my Victorian portrait photography and how the subjects got dressed up for the photos because it was such a rare thing. One aspect in particular I noticed in these photographs was the jewellery that the women wore, and how it stood out in the composition. I chose to incorporate that into my own composition and I love how much the jewellery stands out. In Victorian portraits the expressions of the subjects were usually serious, there wasn't ever any smiling. I really like the effect that my own expression has on the overall look of the photo. My expression is the first thing you notice, and amplifies the seriousness of the whole photograph
10x8 large format photography questionnaire
I really like the strong contrast between the two photograph's. It could almost pass as two completely different people. I wanted to get secondary opinions on the images and thoughts of the subject in each one. I asked 6 people to look at the photos and to give feedback on each one. I asked them to consider a few aspects which I have listed below along with a summery for each image, accumulated form all of the questionnaire responses.
What is the first thing you think of when you look a the person in each image?
Image 1: Reminds me of your dad when he was younger, she looks happy, a kind and warm person, a young lady, a young girl just starting out in the world, a self assured and pretty girl, an image of someone who has kind personality, someone who is nice to chat to.
Image 2: Someone who has the weight of the world on their shoulders, a very serious photo, a strong independent woman who knows her on mind, down beat, someone with a dominant and strong personality, she is bossy and rules the world.
What era does each photograph makes you think of?
Image 1: A modern image, a modern British image, modern photo no older than 1o years, modern picture because of her clothes, not specific to an era as she's just wearing a black top with hair down so it could be anything from 1950s to now.
Image 2: I think it looks quite 80s but an 80s photo of a Punjabi woman because of the jewellery, I don't think of an era more of a Spanish/Italian heritage, I think of a South American business woman in Mexico during the 1950s/60s, I would place this in the Victorian Era and say she is an upper-class Spanish or Indian lady, this is an old picture.
These are just a few of the thoughts from the individuals who looked at my photos. I find the responses to the second image really interesting particularly around ideas of race and ethnicity, as this isn't something I even thought of when lookin at the photo; yet there's such a range of thoughts on the ethnicity of the subject- all essentially stemming from the clothing and accessories.
